Our official sports drinks partner Gatorade hosted Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt and Chelsea first team doctor Mark Gillett this morning, as the pair combined to teach youngsters the importance of sports hydration and nutrition.

The 22-year-old Jamaican, who broke the 100m world record with his run of 9.69 seconds in Beijing last summer, shared the stage with the Chelsea doctor at a Sports Action Zone in Lambeth, South London.

The course began with a presentation from Dr Gillett to the group of about 50 local youngsters, which was followed by a Q&A session before Bolt took them outside for a sprint masterclass.

Bolt, who also broke the 200m record while in China, said: 'It's important that young athletes understand the diet, training, planning and dedication that goes into a performance.

'Today, thanks to Gatorade we have given these guys the chance to learn about what they need to give back to their bodies and I hope I have been able to give them some tips and inspiration to achieve their goals.'

Dr Gillett, who you may have seen treating injured players on the pitch at Stamford Bridge, explained the importance of staying hydrated during exercise and replacing the fluid that is lost when we sweat, adding that we can even check how we are doing by analysing the colour of our urine.

After the event, he said: 'It was a big pleasure to share the stage with the most famous athlete in the world, and it is very important, especially in a summer as hot as we are having, that kids keep themselves cool and hydrated while they exercise.

'The other end of the scale is to ensure they perform at the highest level so we need to encourage good habits.'

Also at the event was local MP Kate Hoey, the former sports minister. She too was impressed with what she saw at the Gatorade-hosted event.

'It's great to see young people being inspired, obviously having Usain Bolt here in the heart of the city is amazing, but also to have someone here telling them about the importance of drinking a lot and understanding their bodies and nutrition is great,' she explained.

'It comes much better from someone in a Chelsea shirt, than even a teacher, and that's why I support this initiative and we're delighted to have it here in Lambeth.'

Dr Gillett returned to our training ground at Cobham this afternoon as preparations continue for the return of the players and the commencement pre-season training on Monday.

We selected Gatorade as a partner because it is the world's most researched sports drink, and the club works closely with them to ensure that the individual players' hydration and nutritional needs are met.
