Michael Mancienne was a half-time substitute as England Under 21s lost the European Championship Final 4-0 to Germany in Sweden on Monday evening.

The Chelsea central defender replaced Manchester City's Nedum Onuoha at the break as coach Stuart Pearce looked to instil some attacking impetus to his backline, the 21-year-old noted for his ability to bring the ball forward comfortably from defence.

A Gonzalo Castro goal in the first half, followed by a Mesut Ozil free-kick in the second and two from Sandro Wagner in the closing stages finished off England's hopes, the Three Lions unable to break down the sturdy German defence, despite a number of good opportunities.

It was Mancienne's third appearance of the tournament after sitting out the semi-final. He was sent off in the first half of the opening game, and played 90 minutes against the Germans in a 1-1 draw in the final group game, having served a one-match suspension.
